My Journey: From Beginner to Professional Web Developer

By streamlining the process and focusing on key milestones,
without sacrificing quality.

My Journey

Three years ago, I completed my Intermediate education in the medical field. While most of my classmates were applying to universities, I found myself curious about the online world — how people earn online, what skills are in demand, and what I could learn without a tech background.

Since I had no experience in computers or IT, I started by taking a short SEO course in Lahore. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well. The teaching was poor, and I lacked proper guidance. I felt stuck and demotivated. I kept thinking, “How can I learn from platforms like YouTube or Udemy on my own?”

Then, a friend suggested web development — especially WordPress — as a better fit for my skills. That advice changed everything.

Getting Started with WordPress

I began exploring WordPress through YouTube tutorials. In the beginning, I didn’t even know what plugins, themes, or pages were. But I kept experimenting on the WordPress dashboard like a curious beginner.

Soon, I discovered Elementor, and that made things easier and more visual. I created my first website for a travel agency — not for money, but for experience. That one project made me realize two things:

  1. SEO is a long-term game and requires patience.

  2. Web development gives instant satisfaction and quicker returns.

So, I made the decision to go all-in on WordPress.

My First Clients and Real Projects

After that first website, I started pitching to local businesses. I explained the benefits of having a professional website in today’s digital world. My first real client was a dairy farm business. I created a 5-page website using Elementor, showcased products using the Filterable Gallery plugin, and delivered the project successfully — earning a 5-star review.

This was a major confidence boost.

Building Skills: From Themes to Speed Optimization

To become more professional, I went deeper into WordPress. I explored tools like:

  • Figma for designing layouts

  • Elementor Pro and Gutenberg for advanced page building

  • Yoast SEO for on-page SEO optimization

  • Astra, Hello Elementor, Motta, and Woostify themes for building eCommerce and service websites

  • Security, backup, and speed optimization plugins to improve website performance

  • CDN integration for faster loading websites

Whether I had clients or not, I stayed consistent with my learning and kept building demo projects.

Struggles, Growth, and Reality

There were times when I didn’t have any clients. Instead of quitting, I focused on personal branding and content creation on social media. I also continued approaching local businesses.

After a few months, I landed my second client — a CNC machine website. Unfortunately, the experience wasn’t great. Many local clients in Pakistan don’t value the work or pay fairly. But I took it as a learning opportunity.

Where I Stand Today

Today, I build advanced WordPress and WooCommerce websites for clients. I focus on performance, mobile responsiveness, SEO, and custom functionality. I’ve gained confidence not only in web development but also in dealing with clients, managing projects, and growing my freelance career.

My journey has just begun, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come — from a medical student to a professional WordPress developer.
